Regarding Romney's choice of Ryan as his VP candidate - over here, it's been said that the choice is to appeal to the right wing/more conservative side of the Republican party, with Romney being seen as less 'conservative'.
Is this likely to work? The question arises as I can't see anyone on the right of the Republican party voting for Obama because they think Romney is too liberal!
NOTE: Not interested (at the moment) in the pros and cons of the various candidates, just what some ordinary American voters of my aquaintance think of this strategy?

He is probably a good pick.....not like the disaster of Pallin last time
He certainly has the facts at his fingertips and can speak extemporaneously without foot in mouth disease and without teleprompters....so he is OK by me. And of course you are correct that that wing of the party wont vote for BO anyway

The thinking isn't that the far-right would vote for Obama, but that the far-right wouldn't vote at all, which would increase Obama's proportion of the vote.
It's the same reason you'll see ballot initiatives designed to bring out far-right voters - abortion issues, same-sex marriage bans, tax issues, religious issues, etc. Since Americans cast ballots for everything at the same time, the deck tends to get stacked to bring out voters who *would* vote for your guy, but would otherwise stay at home.

That last point is a good one, and one that those of us used to single-issue elections tend to forget.
Although when they tried multiple votes at the same time here, people couldn't cope!

As a sidenote I just finished watching all series of The Thick of it, a hilarious series about British Politics. Comes highly recommended. Back in 2007 they were fucking planning to do a fucking American version, but realised it'd be fucking shite, because you couldn't fuckin' swear, for fuck's sake.

They also did a movie version, "In the Loop", with many of the same people but with (bizarrely) some as different, but similar characters!
